Q&A with Susan
What brought you to 23:20, and what keeps you coming back?
Sarah and Tucker and their dream brought me to 23;20 Fitness. I keep coming back because I just feel better!
Where are you from? If not here, when did you move here?
Ottumwa! 1984 OHS graduate.
What do you do outside of the gym? Both for work and play?
I have been a speech pathologist for 33 years. I like reading, traveling and hanging out with my kids and grandkids!
If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?
Travel agent! See the world and get free perks!
If you had to do 100 reps of one movement (not running), what would it be?
Hmmm... Double Dumbbell Snatches (Does that sound like I know what I’m talking about!?)
One year from now, what do you hope to have mastered? What skill or lift do you hope to add to your wheelhouse?
I don’t think I’ll master anything, but I’m sure I’ll improve in everything that I keep trying. I hope to increase weight for wall balls, jump higher for box jumps, and improve my depth for squats and lunges.
What would you say to a person who is apprehensive to join a CrossFit gym?
It’s ok to feel anxious at first but every skill can be scaled to your level and success is just showing up! There is support all along the way. When I started I was out so out of shape that I almost passed out my first day just from riding an exercise bike, and my muscles were so sore every time I came the first month. It’s ok to not be in shape to get started — you will see change if you keep coming back!
What is one thing that CrossFit has changed about your life that you didn't expect it to?
I wake up early to exercise, practice consistency in showing up to exercise, and being comfortable in a gym!
What’s your party trick?
Staying home to babysit!
What is one thing about you people would be surprised to know?
I played piano and violin for 10 years in school and tinkered with other instruments (cello, viola, harp, pipe organ and handbells). I’m not an athlete!
What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
“Do your best and do what’s right!”
